When Amazon.com started using an affiliate program back in 1995, who would have guessed affiliate programs would turn into such a powerful FORCE OF NATURE? But they did. I have clients who report sales doubling every month since implementing an affiliate program! Now it's time for you to make a choice . . . You can either HARNESS that force to drive your sales to unimaginable heights, or you can be beaten down and swept off the face of the internet by them. There's no fence sitting here . . . you can't stand still. You can go FORWARD by riding on this tidal wave, or you can do nothing and watch as your online business is blown into oblivion by others with the foresight to do what you couldn't. What's your choice? Look, I don't mean to sound "alarmist" here. But I can GUARANTEE your competition, sooner or later, is going to start THEIR own affiliate program. Shouldn't you start YOUR own affiliate program first? Just look at the advantages you'll have over your competition if you can beat them to the punch: You'll have a small ARMY of affiliates promoting your products -- and you don't pay anything for this exposure except when they generate a sale for you! You'll be able to harness the HUGE traffic some sites generate just by showing them how they'll profit by joining your affiliate program. You can use your affiliate program to monitor the performance of your own internal advertising -- STOP risking your capital on questionable advertising channels, and focus on the ones that work best! You'll have a quick and simple way to setup "Joint Ventures" with authorities in your field -- and their recommendations will GREATLY increase your sales conversion! MOST IMPORTANT: You can "lock in" strategic partners to promote YOUR product! Once you have them promoting YOUR products, it will be difficult for your competition to convince them to change anything -- people don't like to change! Now look at that list again . . . what if those advantages were owned by YOUR COMPETITION? Not a very pleasant thought, is it? You have the power to make sure it doesn't happen! Nothing compares to having your own affiliate program -- it's the ONLY risk-free, performance-based advertising you can get! With banner ads, pay-per-click advertising, email advertising, etc., you always have to pay UP FRONT for the advertising, even if it results in ZERO sales! I can almost hear the chorus now, "What about search engines optimization? That's free traffic!" If you're going that route, you better be prepared to pay a few hundred dollars a month to a "Search engine expert" -- and even then there are no guarantees. You better prepare yourself for a real roller-coaster ride too, because the search engines are always changing their positioning algorithms and making merchants like us run to catch up. The BEAUTIFUL thing about having an affiliate program is that you never pay a dime for advertising UNTIL a sale is made. Your advertising costs are always a fixed and KNOWN percentage of your revenue. You can't lose! The advantages of having your own affiliate program are GLARINGLY OBVIOUS. Okay, I think I've belabored the point long enough . . . if you're not convinced having your own affiliate program is important to your success, you may as well leave now. Othewise, read on! Three Ways to Have Your Own Affiliate Program The concept of an affiliate program is a simple one: You sign up "affiliates" The affiliates promote your products When their promotion generates a sale, you pay them a commission Your own affiliate program can be implemented in several different ways. Each has their advantages and disadvantages. Let's talk about each one: Affiliate Networks: You can signup as a "merchant" in an affiliate network. One advantage is that they have several thousand affiliates in their network already, and you should be able to get several affiliates rather quickly. However, this advantage is a two-edged sword. Affiliates in affiliate networks are constantly bombarded with new merchant offers and can easily lose focus on promoting YOUR product. Another disadvantage with affiliate networks is cost. It will cost you several hundred to several thousand dollars to just SIGN UP as a merchant, and you'll have to pay monthly fees, usually including a percentage of sales. With an affiliate network, you are dependent on the network's servers for the affiliate program to work. Some will promote this as an advantage -- you're using their server resources instead of your own. This point is certainly well made, as they probably invest a significant amount of time and money in maintaining their network. However, with an affiliate network you are now dependent on TWO servers -- your web hosting server and your affiliate program server. So there are now two places where hardware or internet connectivity problems can disable your business. Most importantly, affiliate networks typically "Own" the affiliates. So if you decide you want to use a different affiliate program provider, you LOSE any affiliates you had through the network. Affiliate ASP (Application Service Provider): Like the affiliate networks, ASP affiliate program providers use their own servers to host your affiliate program. However, their costs are generally much less than with an affiliate network, though you still have a monthly fee. With ASPs, YOU own the affiliates who sign up for your affilaite program. So if you decide to move to a different affiliate program service, you can take your affiliate contact information with you. A HUGE advantage over affiliate networks. Frankly, even though I sell affiliate program software (see below), I'd be lying if I said I didn't see some advantages to using an ASP. It really depends on what YOU want. I'd never recommend an affiliate network to anyone who was serious about having their own affiliate program, but there's one ASP I would recommend -- Corey Rudl's "AssocTrac" -- Corey's been in the affiliate marketing arena since the early days and knows what he's doing. The biggest advantage I can see for an ASP solution is that when they add features, you get them automatically. You do have to pay monthly hosting fees for this privilege, and for some people that's an acceptable trade. Affiliate Software: This is software you purchase and install (or have installed) on your own web server. You don't have any monthly fees and are not required to share any percentage of sales. The initial purchase is the only time you have to pay anything. Besides the (significant!) cost savings, you have the advantage of not being dependent on someone else's server. The software is housed on YOUR web server, not somebody else's. ASP provider's claim it's an advantage to house the affiliate program on their server. Well, let's talk about that. Just like in the affiliate network discussion above, if you're using an ASP, you're really depending on TWO servers for your business -- your hosting server (where you have your web site), and your ASP's affiliate program server. If EITHER ONE of these servers goes down, you can't take orders. So the reliability of your server is a non-issue when comparing ways to implement an affiliate program. If your server goes down, you won't be able to conduct business, regardless of whether you're using an ASP or your own software for your affiliate program. For some people, the main advantage of having your own affiliate program software is that you can control every aspect of how your affiliate program runs. If you want to make the software do something a little different than it was designed to, you can just have the software code modified. It's very straightforward and gives you features "customized" to your needs. It's very likely, however, that you won't need any customization -- most software has all the features you need to run your own affiliate program. And while it's true that you won't get "updated features" immediately like with an ASP, it's usually just a matter of uploading a couple of files to add the features to your installation -- so it's not a big deal. Which Affiliate Program Software Should You Get? Now, if you're still with me, then I assume you're still considering getting your OWN affiliate program software, housed on YOUR server. So the next question, naturally, is "which one should I get". Obviously I want you to get my "Your Own Affiliate Program" software. And I hope to give you some good reasons why it's the best choice for you. The truth is, there are several competing products made by reputable software developers. Some of them have fewer features than "Your Own Affiliate Program" and some have more. But with regards to imlementing the typical affiliate program functions, they're all pretty comparable. Not only that, as a user of various software programs myself, I can tell you that support is one of the MOST CRITICAL factors you should be considering when you make a software purchase! Again, when you look at the basic affiliate program functions, most software packages have comparable performance. So once you get it setup, it doesn't really matter which program you're using. Until you have a question or a PROBLEM -- and everyone has those at some point. That's when you see what you really bought. You wouldn't believe some of the "non-support" horror stories I've heard from clients who are switching from another software package to mine. In terms of time, money, momentum, and goodwill with your affiliates, poor technical support will cost you many times what the software cost in the first place. Look around at the other affiliate software sites and try to find a phone number that leads directly to a LIVE PERSON. Fact is, many of these developers and companies hide behind online "Help Desk" forms, or (if you're lucky), an email address. But I pick up when I'm here, and if you leave a message I'll return your call usually within a couple of hours and always within 24 hours.
